A measurable, auditable way to assess AI maturity across a large insurance group.

Context

AI was being adopted unevenly across the group, governance was inconsistent, and the EU AI Act and IDW were raising the compliance bar. There was no shared instrument for measuring where any given business unit actually stood.

Challenge

AI adoption varied widely across business units, with no shared way to measure maturity against incoming regulation.

Approach

  1. 01Built the framework from the overlap between legal frameworks and business frameworks, selecting seven dimensions covering governance, data, models, process, customer, organisation and strategy.
  2. 02Defined three to eight categories per dimension and weighted each on a one to five importance scale with stated reasoning.
  3. 03Designed a transparent scoring model where every question's contribution to the total is traceable arithmetic rather than a black box.
  4. 04Mapped scores to five named maturity levels and designed dashboards for global, regional and entity views.

Outcome

Built an AI maturity assessment framework: seven dimensions, five maturity levels, 101 weighted questions and a transparent scoring model, deployed as an assessment tool.

  • Seven dimension maturity framework
  • 101 question assessment instrument
  • Weighted scoring model
  • Global and entity dashboards
  • Five step implementation roadmap
